In as long as I have ever known, Christians went to church once a week on Sunday. However, I recently came across someone who attends church on Saturday and this was a complete affront to all my senses. Almost as confusing as the time when I realised Santa was really Mum and Dad with bags under their eyes from lack of sleep staying up wrapping our presents.
You have good parents
Most Christians I know go to church on Sunday. Is this a new trend going to church on Saturday?
Are you asking about praying to God or what day of the week to attend church?
I suppose both. We go to church to pray to God don't we?
People must first be connected to Me before I hear them otherwise their prayers will be wasted - even in church (Proverbs 28:9). This means we (you and I) need to first establish the channel before any genuine communication occurs.
Just like having the broadband or ADSL line connected before I receive any emails or do Google search right?
I like your analogy?
The more you know My will the better we are connected (Thessalonians 5:12-24) and when we are connected your will becomes My will (John 15:7).
So this means we should worship you or commune with you as often as we can?
I have not set a maximum limit for worships (Romans 14:5). So long as your worships are genuine and your actions are not in violation of My will or Word you can pray as many times as you wished. I am forever present with you.
However, to help you know My will and continue to know Me, I have specifically set apart the seventh day of the week so that we can be connected and continue to be connected. That is why I have blessed this day and made it holy (Exodus 20:11). On this day we are to rest (Exodus 20:10), and this particular day is the minimum I ask of you to be connected to Me. That is why I have made it special by blessing it and making it holy.
Using your analogy it's the monthly subscription you pay to be connected to your Internet service provider. Without this subscription none of your emails or Google searches will work because the service provider does not "hear" you.
So what do you really mean "blessed" and "holy"?
Good question.
The word "Bless" means to praise, to exalt or to worship. In Hebrew the word "Bless" means literally "to kneel" the implication here being kneel to worship. To bless a particular day means that I have specifically chosen the seventh day of the week for exaltation and/or prayers or worship.
"Holy" means to set apart in the Bible. God is Holy and a holy day means the day is set apart to focus on the things to do with God.
In short I have set apart the seventh day for rest from work so that you can focus on communing with Me in worship.
I get you that the seventh day of the week is for us to rest from work and worship you. That is why we go to church on Sunday?
I have set aside the seventh day of the week for you to rest and worship Me.
I get you but what is the seventh day then?
It's the day after the sixth day but the day before the first day of the week.
This is going to go nowhere.
Humans have made this very simple concept complicating. To help you through this we just need to establish what is the first day of the week using your human terminology. Now answer these questions for me:
What is Easter Friday?
The day Jesus died.
Good, so you are saying by your terminology Jesus died on Friday?
Let us check out the Bible.
After Jesus died, a man called Joseph went to ask for the body of Jesus so that he can prepare for Jesus' burial. By your terminology, Friday was the day Jesus died. The Bible is with you on this and it also adds that when Joseph got the body, it was just a day before the Sabbath (Luke 23:54).
Knowing that Sabbath was just about to begin Joseph and some women after laying Jesus in the tomb left for home to observe the Sabbath commandment (Luke 23:56). They could not finish the preparation of the burial as it was getting towards the end of Friday and Sabbath starts sun-down on Friday.
Got is so far?
Yes
So when was Jesus resurrected?
Sunday
Excellent
Let's check the Bible again.
The Bible says on the first day of the week (Luke 24:1), the women took the spices they had prepared from home and went to the tomb to find it emptied. Jesus had risen again this day - this day by your terminology Sunday.
Yes - I get it now. The first day of the week has to be Sunday and therefore the seventh is Saturday. Joseph and the women got the body of Jesus on Friday, but did not have time to prepare the body as Sabbath was coming on. They went home, to observe Sabbath (which was Saturday) and then first thing Sunday, which was the first day of the week, they went back to the tomb to finish off the burial.
Congratulations! So When is the first day of the week?
Its Sunday, which means the seventh must be Saturday. You are right we do make simple things too complicated. Thank you.
You are blessed.
